John Lloyd is his worst critic

A life in acting appeals to John Lloyd Cruz because he can put himself in somebody else’s shoes when cameras start rolling and the klieg lights switch on. But John Lloyd, who acts oh so well you could sense the emotion in his every character, feels there is still a void to fill.

"I am my worst critic. I don’t enjoy watching myself in any of my movies or shows," John Lloyd reveals, surprising everyone with his humble admission.

"But please don’t get me wrong because after every take I just feel I should have attacked the role this or that way which could have come out better than what I did," he goes on.

That’s why John Lloyd plans to study acting either here or abroad in an aim to polish his craft while enabling him to show a different take on acting. He believes an actor should have varied styles in his approach to every role.

"One should give a different flavor to a character especially if the role given him is the same as he did before. It should leave a mark on your audience," explains John Lloyd, who turns a year wiser tomorrow.

Because he always leaves a good impression for his performance on teleseryes Maging Sino Ka Man Book 1 and 2 or movie One More Chance, both with perennial leading lady Bea Alonzo, John Lloyd gets his just reward. He has won the Best Actor title from Enpress for his Popoy role in One More Chance. He is also nominated as Best Actor in the Star Awards for the same movie. But would a new screen partner - this time Sarah Geronimo in A Very Special Love to be shown end of July - be another effective teamup for him?

"Sarah and I are always happy on the set. I think we will click together," John Lloyd says. "Yes, there is fear and some worries due to some threats that my supporters will boycott our movie but I feel excited because it will be a good chance to see who truly supports me," he adds.

John Lloyd also believes the new movie will allow him and Bea to grow as individual artists or be paired to other stars. There are now even talks running in the gossip mill that Bea seems to be playing beautiful music with Jake Cuenca which John Lloyd didn’t deny hearing about. He denies knowing what the real score is, however.

"I see nothing wrong with that if ever they are an item. Whatever makes her (Bea) happy would be okay," John Lloyd says.

Still, he is not dismissing the possibility of being paired off with Bea again as he is one of the few being considered to play Armando on Betty La Fea.

"I don’t know why I am included in the list to be Armando. The plan for me this year is to do movies after movies but like a soldier I will just follow orders from my commanders," John Lloyd humbly states.

Now that he is turning 25, John Lloyd aims to come up with something that won’t lead his talent nowhere. He wants to play a role others may deem too drab and too ordinary.

"What challenges me now is playing a character who is not too bad nor too violent. Most people don’t know that portraying an ordinary person really subjects an actor to an acid test because how would you act it out differently when the real and reel are the same? That is more challenging," John Lloyd says.

He, too, wishes that the movie with Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos will follow after his teamup with Sarah.

Does he also think of settling down with girlfriend Liz Uy soon?

"That I can never tell because it will just happen. Right now, we are both tied down with our work and seldom see each other but we make it a point to always call and text each other," he replies.
